Our Curriculum

Fairlie Primary School are currently working on developing their Localised Curriculum and will upload information around our curriculum as it is completed.

Structured Literacy and The Code

Structured Literacy and The Code focus on both how our students are taught explicitly, systematically, and cumulatively and what they are taught:

Phonemic Awareness: Recognising and manipulating the individual sounds in spoken words.

Orthography: Understanding the patterns, rules, and structure of our spelling system.

Morphology: Exploring how words are formed using roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

Vocabulary, Syntax, and Grammar: Developing rich language knowledge and sentence structure.

Together, these components equip our students with the essential skills they need to read, spell, and write with confidence.

Targeted Small Group Instruction

Alongside whole class instruction, our teachers run targeted literacy groups to meet students at their stage of learning. Taking focused, small groups allows us to:

  • Tailor explicit teaching to specific learning steps, gaps, or extension needs.
  • Monitor student progress closely through regular informal assessment.
  • Provide immediate feedback and scaffolded practice in reading, decoding, and encoding.

Ongoing Professional Learning

Many of our teaching staff have completed Structured Literacy and The Code professional development with Liz Kane or Learning Connections. Our Teachers are committed to continuous learning, regularly upskilling themselves and keeping abreast of current evidence based research to deliver high quality literacy instruction across all year levels.
