EOTC

At Fairlie Primary School, learning stretches far beyond the classroom walls. Situated in a rich rural environment, Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) plays a vital role in how our students learn, grow, and connect. EOTC encompasses a broad spectrum of authentic, hands-on learning experiences, from local community visits and environmental projects to sporting events, cultural activities, and overnight camps. By stepping outside the classroom, students are encouraged to push their boundaries and take on new challenges in a safe, supportive environment.  

Outdoor education provides a unique experience that few other activities can rival. It gives our students an opportunity to develop initiative, resourcefulness, and a deeper self-awareness. Furthermore, it stimulates an appreciation of the environment and broadens their horizons.

EOTC not only promotes self-reliance and teamwork, but also affords a sense of community that embraces the whole school. It improves group relationships, encouraging students to become more caring, thoughtful, and supportive of one another’s achievements.

EOTC programmes provide students with access to hands-on experiences that are simply not available inside the classroom, offering unique and stimulating opportunities that support your child’s learning and achievement.

These programmes are fully aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum, actively building core competencies such as thinking, managing self, and relating to others across learning areas like Health and Physical Education, Science, and Social Sciences. 

Our EOTC programme provides an opportunity for students to:

• Develop Self-Awareness & Confidence: Build resilience, trust in their own abilities, and step out of their comfort zones in safe, supportive settings.
• Master Diverse Practical Skills: Gain physical fitness, real-world outdoor capabilities, and risk-management skills.
• Foster Kaitiakitanga: Deepen environmental awareness and guardianship (kaitiakitanga) for our local land, waterways, and rural community.
• Strengthen Community & Connection: Enjoy the social and personal benefits of interacting with others, fostering teamwork, leadership, and a sense of belonging. 

Classes frequently plan visits outside the school to support topics studied in the classroom. Parents will be kept informed of these trips through the Hero App, and we often ask for parents and whānau to join us as supervisors for these outings. To ensure each experience builds progressively on previous years without unnecessary repetition, our outdoor programmes follow a structured pathway: 

Annual Skiing Days: Every year, our students hit the slopes to develop physical confidence, balance, and outdoor skills.

Year 4 Overnight Experience: Serving as a stepping stone for future away-camps, our Year 4s spend an action-packed day out in our local area, building self-belief, teamwork and school values, before spending an exciting overnight stay at school.

Year 5 Mt Hutt Camp: Building on their Year 4 experience, Year 5 students venture to the Mt Hutt area for 3-days, 2-nights for an immersive camp focused on independence and outdoor adventure.

Year 6 Christchurch Experience: Our senior leaders head off on a 3-day, 2-night trip to Christchurch, challenging themselves in new environments and fostering strong team dynamics.

Safety and well-being are always our highest priorities. All EOTC experiences are rigorously planned in accordance with Ministry of Education safety management standards.
